Christi
Therapist/Clinical Supervisor
Christi started at BRC as a volunteer, joined the staff in 2011 as an outreach specialist, and helped pioneer the art therapy program.
WHY DID YOU JOIN BRC?
My first interaction with BRC was in 2010 as a volunteer. I led small group workshops in art-making, and I immediately engaged with the clients and found energy in their creative process. The clients I worked with inspired me, and I wanted to do more for them. This brief experience as a volunteer also revealed to me the significant difference BRC makes in the lives of New York City’s homeless population. After this initial experience as a volunteer, I knew I wanted to work at BRC. BRC advocates for the resources that our clients need, and I am privileged to be a part of this.
WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED AND ENGAGED IN YOUR WORK WITH BRC?
The staff and clients at BRC keep me motivated to continue my work with integrity and compassion. We are a passionate team with the same goal. But more than anything, we would not be here without the clients we serve. Every time I see a client achieve even a small victory, I am reminded of my purpose at BRC.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST POWERFUL MOMENT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED AT BRC? WHY WAS IT POWERFUL?
A powerful and memorable moment was the opening reception for Boulevard Art Expressions, an art exhibit at a 125th street Harlem branch of the New York Public Library. All the art in the exhibit was created by residents of BRC’s Boulevard shelter in our art therapy sessions. Clients, staff, and the public celebrated the achievements of our residents and the work they had accomplished. Seeing the pride residents have in their art and witnessing the well-deserved public recognition for their accomplishments made the exhibit one of the greatest joys in my time at BRC.
