Sharyn is a supervisor for BRC's Transit Outreach program. She started with BRC as an overnight outreach specialist in January of 2009.
HOW HAS YOUR ROLE CHANGED DURING YOUR TIME AT BRC?
Starting as an outreach specialist opened my eyes to social work and answering the call to help those struggling with issues that were foreign to me. Being up close and on the front line taught me valuable lessons that still hold true to this day. Realizing this lead to my interest in becoming a social worker. While becoming a social worker, I became an Independent Living Specialist (ILS) for veterans, which fittingly introduced me to another population in need that is near and dear to my heart. Upon completing my degree, I became an outreach supervisor and was able to teach and train front line staff in the art of outreaching to at risk populations.
WHEN YOU JOINED BRC, WHAT WERE YOU HOPING YOUR EXPERIENCE WOULD BE LIKE? HAS IT BEEN LIKE THAT?
Prior to working with BRC, I imagined that I would be stationed in an outreach center where people in need to come to seek services. To my surprise, I was the one going to the person in need, presenting reasons why they should agree to housing or a beneficial service. I am pleased to know that community services such as this outreach team fight to bring information and assistance to the people, instead of the other way around.
WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED AND ENGAGED IN YOUR WORK WITH BRC?
Teamwork. Everyone pooling together their skills to get the job done. I enjoy seeing people band together and tackle the task of changing lives. Having a strong team and work ethic sends our clients a message of strength, unity and an unwavering belief in humanity.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?
I’ve worked at BRC for 7 years. I was 23 years old when I began working here. While trying to find myself, I found something that I believe to be good at and brings me joy. Without realizing it, I found a career. BRC allowed me to grow and become a professional. I am thankful for every opportunity and I’m excited about what my future holds.
