Human services nonprofit organizations play a vital role in New York City, providing essential safety net services to its most vulnerable residents. However, the sector is currently experiencing a human services staffing crisis that jeopardizes its capacity to deliver these crucial services. On average, these organizations have over 15 percent of their positions unfilled and face alarmingly high levels of staff turnover. This human services staffing crisis not only strains existing personnel but also limits the ability to provide consistent, high-quality care to those in need. Factors contributing to this crisis include competitive job markets, burnout from demanding workloads, and insufficient funding, which hampers the ability to offer competitive salaries and benefits. As a result, the very individuals and families who rely on these services are at risk of receiving inadequate support, highlighting the urgent need for systemic changes and increased investment in the human services workforce.
