Tereen

Vice President of Professional Development and Training

Tereen started at BRC in 2008 as a part-time security counselor. Throughout the years she has grown with BRC while still maintaining the core of what she does—strive to help the people BRC serves move forward with dignity and respect.

Why did you join BRC?
After moving to New York City from Boston, I didn’t know anything about the city, but I knew I wanted my work to have a positive impact on people’s lives. After seeing a few outreach vans around my neighborhood, I looked up BRC and immediately knew it was the organization I wanted to work for. BRC’s mission is powerful, it made sense in a way that just hit home for me.

Have you been able to accomplish what you’ve wanted to in your time here? Why or why not?
One thing I appreciate about working at BRC is my ability to learn. Everyday I learn from both our clients and our staff, and these are the moments that I truly treasure; it has helped me become more empathetic and accomplished in my work.

Without the consistent support and opportunities from BRC to help me develop as a leader and learn from those around me, I don’t think I would be in the position I’m in today. With that said, there is always much more work to be done and I’m looking forward to what I can and will accomplish in the future. I hope to continue to evolve and be innovative in a way that helps meet the unique needs of our clients.

What keeps you motivated and engaged in your work with BRC?
The small successes. I believe that each step forward our clients take is significant. Whether it is making appointments, completing laundry, attending a group, agreeing to treatment, or moving to their new home. I think it takes an incredible amount of fortitude to continue to make those steps towards stability regardless of prior obstacles. Even something as simple as helping someone discover their own potential. It’s amazing to see what people can accomplish once they start believing in their potential and know that we believe in them, also.

To actually see that transition and witness those moments when our clients are proud of their accomplishments—that is what gets me out of bed and keeps me motivated. The endless opportunity to witness something truly inspiring.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your time at BRC?
I couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of such an incredible team. A team that takes their time to teach peers, improve their own skills, and support one another. It is an honor to work alongside people who are passionate and dedicated to our clients’ successes, and continue to show up no matter how challenging the day before may have been.
